A checkout built for how Americans pay will quietly bleed an Indian store. India pays by UPI and by cash at the door — so that is exactly what CommerceOS is built around. Here is the whole payments story, including the parts platforms usually bury in pricing footnotes.
The payment methods that matter here
UPI dominates Indian online payments, and Cash on Delivery still carries a huge share of e-commerce — especially for first-time buyers of a brand they have never heard of. A serious Indian storefront needs both, natively. On CommerceOS, UPI arrives through your payment gateway's checkout, and COD is a built-in order flow with statuses your packing-and-dispatch routine can follow — not an app, not a workaround.
Your own gateway, your own money
CommerceOS connects to your own account with Indian payment providers — Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and others — or Stripe for selling abroad. Three things follow from that design choice:
- Settlements go to you. Money moves from your customer to your gateway account. CommerceOS is not in the money's path.
- You pay published rates. Your gateway's card and UPI fees, exactly as listed on its website — CommerceOS adds no platform transaction fee on top.
- You keep your history. If you ever leave, your gateway relationship, records and rates go with you.
COD as a first-class citizen
COD is not just a "payment method: cash" checkbox. Orders placed as COD flow through order management with their own statuses, so confirmations, dispatch and delivery reconciliation work the way a real COD operation needs them to. (Reducing COD returns is its own craft — we wrote about it in COD vs prepaid.)
We never see card numbers
Card details are entered into your payment provider's hosted fields — the secure input boxes belong to the gateway, not to us. Card numbers never touch CommerceOS servers, which keeps your store on the strictest, simplest side of card-security compliance without you filling in a single form.
What it costs no commission on sales, no per-order charge. The only payment cost in your life is your gateway's published processing rate — which you would pay on any platform.
Setting it up
Connecting a gateway is a settings page, not a project: add your account keys, and your checkout is live with UPI, cards and anything else your provider offers. Enable COD with a toggle. Then go back to the part only you can do — making people want what you sell.
